Update: Games Industry.biz’s Chris Dring has added to the US data points below with trends in Europe. While the methodology is not identical to the one employed by Mat Piscatella and excludes some countries like the UK, he reports that around 68% of “AA and AAA” PS5 game sales were digital in Europe this year.
That’s slightly lower than in the US, but still a majority, and again it helps to highlight why Sony has opted to ship the PS5 Pro without a disc drive.
Original Article: Circana’s ever-enlightening analyst Mat Piscatella has shared some updated details on digital sales splits in the United States – and they more or less confirm why Sony’s opted to exclude the disc drive from its PS5 Pro console. He reports that from January through August of this year, a whopping 78% of PS5 games were purchased digitally, up 3% year-over-year.
The important detail about Piscatella’s methodology here is that he’s only counting games which have a physical and digital version available; any titles only available digitally are not included. Similarly, if Circana doesn’t receive digital sales data – like in rare instances where publishers don’t disclose it – those games are also excluded.
This gives us a pretty good indicator of the US market overall, then. Piscatella does caution that “this doesn’t represent true demand” as retailers have “been more conservative in its assortments and buys, while publishers have been more aggressive in promoting digital”. We’d argue, though, that if physical copies were flying off the shelves, they’d be plentiful available.
For the sake of comparison, Nintendo Switch through the same period posted a 53% digital split, while Xbox Series X|S tallied an outrageous 91%. It should be noted, again, this only accounts for games sold, so Game Pass downloads don’t contribute to this number. If they did, the digital ratio would be even higher on Xbox.
None of this is to say physical is dead: 22% of PS5’s sales is still a reasonable number, and certainly enough to make printing Blu-rays worthwhile. But it does help illustrate Sony’s thinking when it comes to the PS5 Pro’s optional disc drive: some may say it’s a $100 additional expense, but others who primarily play games from the PS Store could equally argue it’s a $100 saving.
The ratio in favour of digital game sales will likely continue to increase on PS5, but probably not dramatically at this point. Clearly there’s still a market for physical games, and we can’t see it disappearing entirely. We reckon Sony’s solution, to offer an optional disc drive, is quite an elegant response to changing market trends – but clearly not everyone agrees.

They can likely 100% get away with launching a discless, no compatible drive console with figures like these.
I think people will eventually really want to watch a DVD or Bluray, dig one out and then realise they cant anymore
A pro console is a premium product. Losing the disc drive is not a premium product.
I’m not paying up to £70 for a digital rental. There’s no excuse to charge the same price as a physical version when there’s no distribution and packaging costs anymore. Let’s not forget, there will only be one place to buy games in the future if physical is stopped so unless the EU want to investigate and possibly force 3rd party store fronts I don’t see anything but a loss to us the consumers.
Epic’s Tim Sweeny doesn’t seem so interested in opening up the PlayStation and Xbox ecosystem’s like he has been with Apple and Google.
This doesn’t count second hand physical games, so is irrelevant.
I feel like this needs to account for small digital games that aren’t available physically.
Sorry, but it's entirely so they could try to save face by not selling the console at a higher price point than people are already upset about. These numbers are meaningless and don't count physical movies or used games sales.
1st week sales splits between disc and digital for new popular AAA games would interest me more.
@TomasVrboda Exactly right about used games, they’re a market that isn’t tracked in the same way. With the £70 price point almost everyone I know will either buy an older game second hand or trade their copies in once they finish a brand new game.
These stats don't tell the whole story though, how much of this are years old games in PSN sales for example? What we really need are sales splits for new releases as these will be much closer and even favour physical for some games.
This also ignores the huge used market, obviously none of this money goes to Sony but this stat in no way really reflects how many games are bought or played physically
Like It or not, I'm totally fine with my basic PS5 then. I don't want to buy a premium product that much worse then basic and pay more for things that should be included.
Aww, poor Sony. They really, really wanted to release it with a disc drive you see. But the stupid market forced their hand. They might save some money, but I'm sure it is with a heavy heart.
So next time you feel like Sony is a bit anti-consumer, take a deep look in the mirror and realise you are the problem...you entitled bigot! 😋
I prefer not having a disk drive on Pro as standard - providing there is an option to add one.
That way those who dont want it dont have to pay for it in the console price, but if you do, you can buy the drive and plug it on easily. Seems a win-win situation to me.
@thefourfoldroot1 exactly, I keep stating that on these persistent articles. There's a massive second hand market so the least pushsquare could do is acknowledge the fact this is brand new sales
@get2sammyb it’s important to note these numbers include digital sales of digital only games, DLC and eshop/PSN MTX currencies.
Sales data that compares a game that has a physical to only the full game sales skew in favor of physical usually (look at the insomniac leaks or capcom sales data)
Yeah can't say i care about the lack of disc drive as i'm 100% digital.
PS6 will have an optional console
I was slowly falling into the convenience of digital purchases but after these companies saying we don't really own them and are just paying for a license to play them, I've gone back to going out and buying a disc.
They can't take away a disc. Even if I have to play the game without the day one updates/patches in the future, at least I can still play them.
Long live cartridges!
Remember when PlayStation put out that cheeky YouTube video tutorial on how to share your games with friends? Oh how the times have changed.
Short sighted customers paving the way for companies taking us out. I basically fund my next new release by selling the previous one, if it's a regular edition there's a bit of a loss, if it's some special edition Steelbook I even manage to sell for a profit occasionally. If I buy second hand there's usually very little to no loss at all.
So my gaming is practically either low cost or self funding while I play all the latest releases, because of the great inconvenience of getting my butt off the couch to switch discs occasionally.
Yeah, 100% digital is so great, sitting on a digital catalogue of games that don't really belong to you and that you're most likely not gonna replay at the speed of new releases these days. Makes sense.
I want to own the products I pay for. I refused to buy the digital only Diablo 4 expansion. I get more then enough digital only ganes from PS+ maybe over 300 by now.
PS. on digital do they count PS+ games as sold digitally?
I think the physical to digital ratio on brand new releases during launch week are much closer, and thats why physical is going nowhere anytime soon. These high digital figures are inflated by the amount of playstation store sales on older games.
Eggs and chickens. Which came first?
Be interesting to know what percentage of Pro purchasers also buy the disc drive. I would think the person who buys the top tier console is the sort of person that has a bit of a physical collection.
I find it surprising how much people still prefer physical on this site, although it makes sense cause this is an enthousiast crowd.
I just buy my games digitally now, and to be honest. The small chance that i might not be able to play some of them in 20 yrs doesn't really bother me. To be fair, i hardly ever replay games
@Enigk I got a the PS Pro drive in many places the Drive is sold out.
All the people that cry about discs and disc drives are helping digital sales get higher😂
Unacceptable! Sony should cater all hardware directly for me!!
@LowDefAl the way you get so passionate about this topic, it seemed to me that you were anti-second hand/trading in from your original comments - it made me think you were a digital only person. It seems you are a fellow savvy shopper.
@LowDefAl And this makes total sense to me. But im just a sucker for the convenience, i don't feel like i wanna go to a store and sell a game every time im done with it to buy a new one. Or online for that matter. But still, definitely a solid reason for wanting physical.
Don't get me wrong, i was a physical guy up to and including the early part of this gen. I guess i just gave in for the convenience of it all
Really weird how the article says if GP downloads were included then digital would be higher.
Surely it’s the exact same if psplus figures were to be included?
Tips hat, spits tobacco
I don’t like it. No sir, not one bit.
It is really important to highlight that this is stretched over several months which favors digital in a couple of ways. So much sales come from back catalog digital sales that are deeply discounted.
We would need a more comparable research on new games when they are available.
Catalog sales skew the data towards digital, since everything is readily available.
I wish we could get the disc drive for this price but it does make sense as: 1) saves them from doing two versions of the console 2) makes it a little less obscenely expensive 3) some people already have the disc drive from their digital PS5.
I bought my blu-ray PS5 in 2021, still havent used the disc drive and I'm a movie buff.
One of the problems here is that physical actually is digital. Most of games nees always online or they have only the registration id and then download. Which means of servers are killed you again remain empty handed.
I have no problem with digital, i have problem with buying smth which after that you dont actually own.
And as for Sony, yes they are stupid, very, they beacame so big because they are stupid. They released the protal (so stupid) and now the pro( even more)...and then the salea data hits you. Same as digital.
Ps. Sorrt for mistakes, too many old fashioned
Do they include the digital only products to the sales like DLC, seasonal passes,microtransactions. I had a bloody difficult time finding Silent Hill 2.
Does that include secondhand games though and some people play 4K Blu-rays on their PlayStation 5 as well as games you can take statistics and make them look however you want
@LowDefAl
Yes. And when comparing how many people buy and use physical games versus digital games, this all means we do not have the data to make a comparison. We have data on all the digital games bought, but not all the physical games bought through the various channels including second hand and personal sale. Which is why I said this conclusion was irrelevant. Glad you agree.
@dimi better to have it and not use it rather than need it and not have it
I have a original disc PS5 and have used the drive a lot but am not going to be upset if moving forward the drive is an optional extra providing the current drive will be compatible with the PS6 so that you can simply keep moving your drive across the generations.
I know its unlikely that would happen but I can live in hope
@UltimateOtaku91 and do they only include sales of new games or second-hand as well
@Medic_alert
No, and neither can these analysts or you. It is impossible to track when I buy a game from my cousin for a fiver, or CEX for a tenner. Which is exactly why any comparison of physical versus digital is irrelevant. We simply don’t have the numbers to make such comparisons accurate.
I haven't bought a physical copy of a game since the PS3/360 generation, but I still bought a PS5 with a disc drive because I DO still buy physical discs when it comes to movies. If I get the Pro (up in the air), I'm not sure if I'd get the drive or not. I could always just move my 4K player from the other room.
@Artois2 Less options does make it less of a complete product. That's is less premium for me personally.
You can tell me a lot of things but bluray always looks better then Netflix quality, music sounds better on physical media. But yes sometimes less options make things less premium.
The first PS3 also was the most premium by far more options and a higher quality of finish and more options.
I call BS on this one. Most PS5s have a disc.
In Canada very few stores are stocking physical, sometimes getting one or two copies of big release like Mario party or metaphor. It’s an intentional flog to force people to buy digital so that they don’t have make physical anymore or allow people to own their stuff. Nothing new.
@LowDefAl So it's a little incomplete also secondhand ofcourse is not in the picture which probably is a massive market.
I can afford the games new but I'm certain that there are a lot of people that can't.
And the Insomnic showed a different picture and yes i believe that Sony, MS and every other big developer rather see us digital because then they completely own the market.
Also games like COD AND FIFA can't wait to make it fully online liveservice to close the old editions the every year making you buy the newest version.
The best thing when this happens they won't even have to try anymore because you can't go anywhere else a big corp wet dream.
@Rich33 Kinda what I was thinking. I have a digital ps5 and no interest in buying physical.
I had no plans to upgrade, but decided against my best judgement to preorder one anyway.
I dont need the disk drive, so unless sony ate the cost, im happy to have saved money.
Should I want a drive, now i have the option as well.
@Coffeeglitch I never noticed because I buy online. I agree some titles are hard to come by when you have to go to the store. Most of my games are bought online because there is no option buying them in stores.
It is pretty wild how PlayStation is adopting what Microsoft wanted to do with the launch of the Xbox One.
But also tbf, it's what the industry is sadly heading to.
@Sergo lmao the Portal is selling well u might think it stupid it product that is selling no matter what you think of it
Wow. Even Nintendo Switch, with its strong culture of physical media among the player base, just barely favors digital distribution. And the digital ownership ratio is only likely to increase as time goes on.
PS6 is probably gonna ship without a disc drive. You'll have to buy an attachment.
Just cancelled my order on that news (was a knee jerk pre order anyway). Unless the law changes that the digital ownership is 100% yours, I’m avoiding digital purchases. It’s also handy to sell games on that I didn’t enjoy, which is about 40%. will still purchase the odd Indy as digital.
@TrickyDicky99 So what? The US is the biggest market in the world for console games, by far.
Anyway, I'm guessing you'll probably see a preference for digital worldwide.
I was ready to go all-digital in December 2014 on PS4. If they hadn't bundled GTA 5 in with my PS4 I wouldn't have gotten a disc for years. Only reason I have PS4 or PS5 discs are the deals I got buying them physically
No one will rob me of that new physical game smell! Digital ownership is not ownership!
@Runex2121
Yeah, i just dont get the arguments.
There is a debate to be had over Physical vs Digital games, and the stats here are interesting.
( I also understand the argument of built-in drives not needing pairing but not being replaceable, but Sony has already decided on the route of non built-in drives long ago with slim).
The basic fact here is that if Pro had included the drive it would have been more expensive. Doing it the way they have just gives you the option to save your money, if you dont want a drive, and spend it now or later if you do.
Enjoy the pro! (All the DF videos keep making me wish it was here sooner!)
@Medic_alert
I don’t know what you’re talking about fella. Nobody is denying they want the used market gone. I think you’re stuck on a topic this article is not about. It’s about Sony purportedly releasing digital consoles because nobody buys physical, but they are ignoring a huge second hand and personal resale market. That is all.
Of course, these stats don't take into account second hand sales..
There's a.huge market in people buying a disc version, finishing it, and then selling it for 50% less than they paid for it..
That user, and the next who buy the used disc, get the game for half price. Can't do that with digital products.
I'll always want a drove for suh d content, but it's good that the drive is optional.
It will be grave error to ever make playstations disc free though, they might not benefit directly from the second hand disc sales, but they will miss the tow punters who no longer buy the game as it's not more than full price and non transferrable
@MatthewJP But the secondhand market is usually for things that are well past their sales peak.
@Medic_alert
Yes, I agree, that is all very true, and completely irrelevant to what I’ve said. So I’ll stop here.
@MrPeanutbutterz nonsense, I've been playing astro bot for a few weeks
@TheMightyImp2
I wouldn’t completely discount the value of the second hand market. I bought Yakuza 0 second hand, it got me into the series, and now I buy the Yakuza games day one because I can’t wait to play them. Of course, publishers need great games for that to be the case, which is hard.
@nessisonett That's a nonsensical comment that is like saying a modern laptop without a floppy drive is a not a premium product. Or a sports car isn't premium because it doesn't have a CD player. Tech marches on and market forces are driving it. I am grateful that Sony isn't making me spend more money on the console just because the minority of players are using discs. If you want discs, you have the option to add on. Calling it less than premium because it doesn't include it is ridiculous.
If they charged $100 more and included the drive would it suddenly be premium?
I’d still rather have physical. Granted the only systems I have are a 3DS, 360, Vita, and GBC. I’m thinking of getting a PS4, but would still rather have physically. You can get used games cheaper year round, rather than having to wait for a sale on the digital store. My brother is the same way, having a massive physical game collection, but will buy digital Switch games at when they run massive sales or for games that aren’t available physically. I really don’t like all digital anything. My internet is lousy, and don’t want to have to deal with waiting forever to download an entire game. DLC or updates are fine, but it’s too much of a headache for me.
I personally don't mind the concept of the drive as an add on, it's better than not existing at all, which would pretty much kill my interest in consoles.
I'm betting the sorts of games I enjoy, single player RPGs, single player adventures, are probably doing a lot better on the physical side. I can see why stuff like GTA online, call of duty, FIFA etc, dominates digitally, service games.
@Jaz007 Or how much it even accounts for some of that silly shovelware people buy out of curiosity that’s under $5. That definitely adds to things a lot I think.
@MrMagic Exactly, where are those numbers!
Well that and apparently sourcing BD drives became a chore.
Even Phil Spencer was complaining about it couple of months ago.
I wonder if the future of physical media is going back to cartdriges again, since optical is no more but we have flash memory to spare.
I still prefer physical media than digital.
I still prefer old school style video gaming.
Let's get physical! Physical!
#keepplayingphysicalgames 🤟
Looks stagnated to me. Only growing 1 or 2% a year now and it got a huge boost because of covid.
There are also big deals every week on all e-shops.
I for one am actually ok that Sony didn't put the disc drive in the Pro as standard, cause that would've increased the price. And why should i pay more for something i don't want or need? The Pro still allows for a disc drive as an add-on, this way everyone can make their own choice.
Regarding some of the ownership arguments. Do people here also havent switched to digital music and movies? Just curious
I may be an old school player from the Atari era but I have gone 100% digital since PS4 days. I don't buy day one, I never preorder, and wait for great sales months later or even a year later. When I finish a game I never go back to play it again years later because I always have a massive backlog of new to me games I want to play. I know I'm a tiny minority, but that's just how I roll now.
2 problems here. Physical games are much cheaper here in Australia. I can get AAA games at launch for up to 40% cheaper, so buying physics is a no brainer. If they made digital cheaper or even the same price I would probably go digital.
I don't have an issue paying extra for a disc drive on the Pro, but make the bloody thing available. It's been out of stock here since the Pro announced, with no sign of them coming back in stock any time.soon. You can't call it an elegant solution if they're unavailable.
I'll likely be cancelling my Pro preorder if I can't get a drive at launch, it's killed the initial enthusiasm I had for it
Doesn’t mean anything. I believe they mean this split is in number of digital downloads, which with constant sales of indie games for a couple of dollars versus a full $70 new release would explain this percentage. If that’s the case, this doesn’t mean that a new God of War had this split ratio of digital sales.
By selling the disc drive separately they increase their margins. Both the console and the disc drive have profits baked in, sell them separately and that increases, I personally think it’s really as simple as that.
I already have the disc drive on my shelf at home waiting for the PS5 Pro. I own about 50 discs. Trends being what they are, I have preferred the digital version for some time now. Unless of course there is too much of a price difference over the physical version. Physical media will end one day whether you like it or not. When switching to digital only, I want to keep it as seamless and financially acceptable as possible.
I’m in the $100 savings group. I’m glad I won’t be forced to pay for a drive I won’t ever use (when I eventually upgrade to the Pro). Haven’t bought game on disc since PS3.
And no, it’s not because I’m too lazy to switch a disc. It’s because I live in a small apartment in the city and prefer to not have a lot of physical things with no good place to store them.
@Emmiranda I think you’ve got it wrong. They didn’t count games without a physical version at all.
Is this measured in units or money?
I only buy cheap/small games digitally, so I would say i technically buy more games on digital, but I spend more on the Physical games.
Also, i would love to know how if any subscription is affecting this (like PS Plus Essential, where you technically buy the game as you get a receipt and everything)
@bestuardo but then how they can claim 78% of the games are digital if they are not counting physical? I am really asking I may be getting something wrong
@thefourfoldroot1 2nd hand games resold don't count, as the game was already purchased. even if it changes hands and some one else owns it , the original copy was already paid for , so its still the same game.
i actually like the idea of a detachable disc drive myself, while i know not all people are into it , but think about it. if the disc drive fails and you can replace it yourself , that makes it easier , or they just replace the drive if you still can get a free replacement. while a normal disc drive you have to send the whole console in.
I totally get how the disc drive being optional could be perceived as consumer friendly, giving us all more options. But the $80 (US) price tag for the drive feels ridiculous, especially given that the price difference between the current slim digital/disc is only $50. If they’re trying to be consumer friendly, then match this price with the Pro, and sell it bundled with the drive for $750. And then on top of that they want another $30 for a stand to make the console stand up vertically like it is shown on the f***ing box it ships in… Ugh… Sony has been watching Apple and taking notes… 🙄
If it wasn't about milking people as shameless and aggressively as possible, then:
A) Sony would subsidize the disc drive with a fraction of the money they save from selling digital media at an unnecessarily inflated price, or
B) they wouldn't go to such great lengths to ensure that a third party drive can't be used.
Absolutely tragic. If you’re one of these digital buyers I have to ask why you buy digital over physical
Get used to it there is no way we ever see disc drives again for future consoles. The future is digital
@MikeRobT101 PS6 games will be around £100 no discs digital only. I think the next generation of consoles won't be for everyone. They're going to be extremely premium for those earning the big money.
The problem is you don't own digital games, you license them, no problem for pc market because it's a free market with competing stores (steam/gog/egs), but prepare for orwellian console future if the next batch of console is a digital only with no disc drive/cartridge.
Banning all your paid digital games because you said something that the console makers didn't like (according to their tos) on social media seems likely. The law have to force the corporation to make digital games are bought, not licensed.
I like digital games since it's so convenient, but the corporations made digital future sucks 😕
I don't believe this for a second. This is either a flat out lie or manipulated figures to justify getting rid of physical games completely.
Easily done too. Just count every interaction with the digital store. I get a "Thank you for your purchase" email every time I download the monthly games on PS+
Then count the DLC purchases......
Easily done.
Wow I’m all digital but never realised the digital market had that high percentages of game sales.
There you go, it’s happening quicker than I ever thought it would, the all digital age.
A digital life I have been living for at least 5 years now is brilliant I love it.
Films, music and games. No physical stuff hanging around taking up space. No swapping physical items in and out to play.
In the car it’s great all my music on a tiny USB stick. Gone are the days of swapping cassettes or discs whilst driving.
It’s all so much easier.
What gets me and I don’t now the age demographic here. I’m an old one on here and have lived with physical media all my life and it’s such a joy not have to anymore.
But is it the younger ones that don’t like this all digital media.
@Mikey856

@OldGamer999 ha okay pal fair enough then if it works for you but I can counter that because I’m also an old one and I absolutely hate not having a physical item that I can hold that has actual value. Every game I’ve ever brought is in my game collection In the spare room and yes it does take up a lot of space 😜 but I love just going In there for an ogle 😝
@Mikey856
I guess different chaps like different things and the way we are 😊
I used like collections in the very old sort of Neo-Geo days.
But once music went digital then video it all sort of followed me with gaming, thinking this is slick and convenient.
The age thing comes from so many on here objecting, I thought they all can’t be old like us, so a lot of young ones must be objecting to digital as well. 🤣
@OldGamer999 yeah I think the digital revolution began way back in the early 00’s with the torrent sites if ygm. But yeah different strokes for different folks. I’ll never get the other view personally but there we are. How adult of us 😂😂
@Mikey856
It’s good to be adult, well sometimes 🤣🤣
Whenever there is an article about digital sales ratios you’ll always find the same 10-20 people in the comments explaining why the data is bad(using terrible logic, misinformation or just not reading basic information from the article).
Also, secondhand sales aren’t relevant because they generate zero revenue for the games industry. Zero for Sony, Zero for the publisher, zero for the developer. They generate the exact same revenue as a pirated copy, so let’s track pirated copies too.
Waiting for the PS6 I think may come as a huge shock for some people, looking like it may be digital only at this rate
They will pry disc drives from my cold dead hands!
But seriously - discs are cheaper, can share them with friends, they have aftermarket value and some game-preservation value.
So all in all I prefer physical.
The reason is that adding a disk drive would push the price of the console too high for some of the enthusiasts to stomach. £700 is the absolute limit for a standalone console.
Also, the console being modular is a better design option than not.
@Mikey856 I used to buy only physical but as time has moved on with the exception of the games I truly care about I now buy all of the rest digital, I used to have over 100 PS4 games I now have 8 and that's totally fine, the fact they are pointing it at people like me is absurd and the fact that some people hate on someone else because their habits are different is also absurd. We are all different and have different lifestyles and needs.
I choose not to like it then.
@LowDefAl you could look at this as you paid £15 to rent it as you had it and now don't.
I bought it digitally. By the time it's no longer available to me due to that I'm likely in a nursing home not knowing what day it is 😂
Look, I still buy physical discs sometimes, alongside digital, but come on guys, you're fighting a losing battle here. The fact that so many people on here keep citing the used disc market - which simply reinforces the point that fewer people are buying discs new, the only purchase that matters (obviously) to games companies - merely shows how weak the arguments for physical have become.
PC went all digital years ago, PS6 and the next Xbox are almost certainly not going to have disc drives included, and the games market itself is clearly headed in an all digital direction. You can moan and whine all you want, but you're not any different to the people who cried over the closing of Blockbusters et al. Whatever the advantages/disadvantages may be, DVDs, Blu Rays and physical games are all going the way of the dinosaurs - come back here in, say, 10 years' time and you'll see how quaint your arguments sound then.
I don’t care that these companies and normal people are okay with the forced digitization. I will buy physical media for as long as I can. I will never buy a console that doesn’t support real physical media. As for me a console isn’t an IoT device forever. When a new system comes out, I keep my hardware and physical games. Then hook it up whenever I want to play or when a younger member of my family wants to play a great older game. For those that support digitalization your products need to be significantly reduced and there needs to be laws that allow for you all to download to any medium you want for future use. The day I cannot buy a console with physical media comes, I’ll just simply not buy that console. As I detest internet of everything.
@ecurb7 the digital PC market is different mate. The windows software that one has on their gaming PC can last a decade at least. Even whenever someone updates it to the latest new windows, they don’t loose access to their digital content. Now I do think steam needs to allow full downloads to one’s games as their model isn’t ownership. The console market is about ease. My family has kept every console that we ever bought along with the games. We will never lose access to those games or versions of the games. As we all know the modernist crowd loves to update content for the “modern audience.”
I’m prepared to pay a premium for physical console media. As I pay a premium for all of my blu-rays and CDs. As I believe in ownership. I think consumers will realize how bad of a deal forced digitization for everything is eventually.
@Mattlong78 cool well I hope you don’t think I was hating on anyone buying digital because I wasn’t ✌️
I went full digital on PS4. Alot of games go on giant discounts all the time and with games I saw the writing on the wall so decided to build the digital library for my console that I can hopefully use for many years going forward. Hedged my bets really and decided if a PS6/7 was to be released as a fully digital console but still backwards compatible I would be able to still play my old favourites.
I know people get worried about the license stuff but I'm less concerned. I was a teenager when the PS3 come out and now I'm in my 30s. The PS3 digital games I have still work. Even if the store closes I don't forsee not being able to download the games.
Our time on this earth is finite. In 40 years I'll be 76. Seems like a long time from now but it's really not, we're already 18 years on from PS3. Do you think Sony will go away in that time? I don't and I don't think any of my digital purchases PS4 and on will likely do so either.
In a few years this whole digital ownership thing is going to come to ahead and I suspect customers will be on the winning side of it.
And hey if I'm totally wrong I can always just hack the console and get access that way.
"Xbox Series X|S tallied an outrageous 91%."
It's worth noting that digital keys for Xbox can be purchased so much cheaper (through resellers) than their physical counterparts.
For example I picked up Alan Wake 2 Deluxe and Baldurs Gate 3 a couple of weeks after release for £20 each.
So maybe not that "outrageous", more like common sense.
The arm chair sales experts and data analysts in the comments section make me laugh! Do they really think they know more than the companies who keep making profits year in, year out?
@Vaako007
Think you missed the point of my comment, mate (!). It's a simple fact that console gaming is heading the same way as PC gaming - all your stuff about Windows etc. is, I'm afraid, irrelevant - whether you or I like it or not. Keep all your old hardware as long as you want, fine if that's what you want tobdo, but it doesn't change the fact that future gaming is increasingly moving in an all digital direction.
By way of comparison, I'm old enough to have some nostalgia for the days of going to Blockbusters on a Friday night to rent a movie, for example, but the past is the past, it isn't coming back. Again, like it or not, the future of TV and films is Netflix, Disney+ etc. not physical discs, and the future of gaming is the same.
Having an optional disc drive you can swap out is a fantastic idea, but not for £100. Sony's prices are taking full advantage of the customer at every opportunity.
But if they remove the ability to use optical media the data will obviously show a false increase in digital. If you still want to game. I just find reports like this nothing more than feeding the echo chamber. There are many other areas of industry where you see people constantly ask for collectors editions of games, or just publishers releasing physical versions of their games, they even promote such activity. Plus we all bang on about the golden age of gaming and being able to play classic old games on original hardware, especially the Megadrive and SNES era, with digital, Sony has never wanted to let you use your OG PS1, PS2 or even PS3 games....they could have easily added software emulation into the PS4 or 5 to recognise our old PlayStation games, no they want you to buy digital versions yet again. And don't think it ends there, look at Dino Crisis. The digital version of a PS1 game, but you can't even buy it, unless you have paid £120 for their abhorrent PS+ upgrade. So don't promote the rise of digital or lack of a blu-ray drive as a good thing. They are making mugs of you all.
@bestuardo
This. I’m in the exact same boat. I like the convenience of digital games and have zero space in my flat for a stack of blu-ray boxes.
@C25CLOUD Mate, that was sarcasm. This is what I meant. People hate it and say they arr smarter than Sony but at the end they sell like crazy.
This article fails to mention a few things I felt I had to, after nearly making the CRITICAL MISGUIDED MISTAKE of buying a digital only PS5 Pro system, simply for the convenience of not having to get up and swap discs. Not to mention the fact that when purchasing a physical disc and installing it to your PlayStation console, it always seems to want to download the entire game again anyways, so I thought what the heck, I might as go digital.
I'm so happy I gave it more thought, and didn't make that mistake!
First of all, the $100 you will save on a digital only system is negligible considering the overpriced games on the digital market compared to the discounted games in the physical retail market. Especially for older titles that should be heavily discounted.
I won't even bother factoring in that you can buy, sell, and trade used games, or even rent them in rare cases. I will also be ignoring the benefits of PlayStation Plus premium tiers, since overtime, you would end up spending far more, not to mention that PlayStation Plus continues to increase in cost, year after year.
Let's also consider that they can remove games from a digital store, but not from your personal physical collection. Of course titles that require online play can always be shut down.
A a couple of price examples are as follows, excludes sale pricing when applicable (Prices shown are in Canadian dollars);
DayZ PS4 Digital $79.99
DayZ PS4 Retail $33.25 (Amazon)
Battlefield 2042 Digital $89.99
Battlefield 2042 $9.99 (Best Buy)
GTA 5 PS4 Digital $79.99
GTA 5 PS4 $19.99 (Best Buy)
The list goes on..
Sony appears to keep games on the digital market at their full retail price regardless of the age of the game, so that they can appear more attractive when having sales.
I will take full advantage of physical media for as long as I can, just as I will continue to drive a gas powered vehicle for as long as I can.
But to each their own, go ahead, purchase all those digital games you don't actually own, buy that electric vehicle you've always wanted, that will cost you more in the long run, and enjoy those subscription-based seat warmers, and premium car features automotive companies are pushing out.
@Medic_alert I completely agree about the benefit of having a removable Drive since it's a well-known failure point on disc based consoles. In fact the drive on my PlayStation 3 recently died for no apparent reason.
@twitchtvpat
It counts when talking about if people want disc drives or not. Why does everyone ignore the point of the article?
@Medic_alert
You can do this on PS as well, in the UK at least, not sure about other markets. Shopto is the official Sony reseller here. As a gold member a £70 card is £60. I haven't paid full price for a digital release once this gen.
That being said, hopefully the option of a drive and support for physical will be around for a long time to come.
Convenience of not putting a disc in has overridden everything else.
They should start selling their consoles like IKEA sells their wardrobes.
"Look how cheap the new playstation is!"
But it doesn't include a disc drive. No controller. 1GB storage. 30 frames per second. Want any more than that, it's an added extra 😂
@Medic_alert True, they're never going to match what is technically a grey market, and physical will always be slightly cheaper at launch, but the difference is often not as much as people assume. Metaphor for example is £49.95 physical, and I paid £53.60 for digital.
The last five games I've purchased have been digital games because there weren't physical versions. I'm not suggesting that those smaller games warrant a physical release but these stats of physical v digital sales will always favour digital based on pure availability.
@FactsofLife Let it all out son 🤣
Not happy, buy the detachable disc drive.
Most complaining weren’t even going to buy the Pro anyway.
When PS6 launches, you’ll get both options so stop crying about everything even when it doesn’t concern you.
Grow up.
AGAIN, AGAIN and AGAIN!!! You cannot count apples with pears!!! These numbers don't count games released ONLY in both variants (digital and disc) but all games, where at least 60% are released only digitaly, so people have no choice! So this article is irrelevant!!!
@Medic_alert Same here.
I think the crux for many is they want the option to always be there, and they probably feel like they're slowly being ushered in to a future where that might not be a reality. I don't imagine it happening any time soon, at least not for another 8 year generation, but I think it's coming.
F the PS5 Pro and Sony at the moment. Backlog from my physical all-generation-Playstation-library is huge and, considering the actual usefulness of the PS5 in general, PS6 couldn't interest me less. F digital license rental.
@LuXifer (to comment #14)
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Had my PS5 since launch day and I don’t even know if the drive works. I’ve never used it, so I’m not bothered that my Pro won’t have one.
I don't understand why some people are so upset by this. It is what it is. Deep inside, you guys know, but when the reality doesn't align with your view, then you guys bring up it does not paint the whole picture, blah blah. No used market included blah blah. Have you guys even been to used games store like CEX, Games in the UK recently? They don't even have many PS5 used discs. They still have more last gen discs than current gen in store. Similarly, there used to be more sales of Physical discs last gen, but now much rarer. Note whether selling more physical or digital does not have any impact on me.
I'm pretty much all digital for games, and have been since the start of the Xbox One / PS4 era, @OldGamer999. I have amassed over 1600 digital games in that time period..! The only exception is for Collector's Editions where they include a disc that I can get to. So, if it's inside the box, I tend to leave it there as I don't often open my Collector's Editions, as to do so immediately devalues them, but if the disc is sent separately, I will use it. I have probably something approaching 100 Collector's Editions, and whilst most of them are probably not worth that much, a few have increased quite a bit in value, but then they are for my satisfaction, nothing else.
However, when it comes to films, I buy all my films in 4K (where I can), and always on disc. I have a huge collection of films, easily over a 1000, and they are stored in multiple display cases. I also have two full cabinets of 360 and PS3 discs.
Lastly, I still have over 1000 CD's, but it is not something I ever really buy any more. For the past 7 or 8 years, I have streamed my music via my Alexa. I don't even have a Hi-Fi set up any more. I just have multiple Alexa's throughout the house; front room, kitchen, downstairs hallway, upstairs hallway, and 3 of the 4 bedrooms, so 7 in total! 😂
I won't be getting a Pro, but when I get the PS6, I will probably also get a disc-drive to go with it, as I will still want to play my movies...
@carlos82 Those same games that are sold digitally through a Sale are likely to be on sale as physical media too and often have been on sale and/or at lower cost than Digital.
Used sales are not counted because used have already been 'sold' once and as they aren't contributing to numbers (including number of Gamers with access, sales figures etc) they are not considered. Someone bought originally (so that counted as a 'Physical' purchase) and so can't be counted again...
Of course there are games that are Digital Only too where as all the Physical games are also sold Digitally. Therefore sales of Digital only games/content can skew the results in favour of Digital. Gamers have no choice but to buy Digitally with those and BOTH Sony/MS have 'digital only' Hardware too. By taking away 'Physical' as an option - with many games not released on Physical formats and even certain Hardware missing Physical media players, then obviously Physical isn't going to be the most popular.
With 'millions' of games sold every week, inc 'old' games from last gen on sale on current gen hardware, Physical is still relatively big. 22% would be 1.1m copies sold physically every 5m total sales on average...
I'm not buying that reason. Imo the reason is to keep costs down. A lot of people who are buying a pro probably have a slim also, so they could swap out the drive on that for the time being. Then later when they recover financially, they could buy the disc drive at a later date. It'll be difficult to play a lot of PS4 games on the pro without the disc drive.
Mat Piscatella is sprouting from the top of his head, the same as myself.
Sadly this is the way now, I love physical games but so few places sell them now compared to the old days, I hate going into town now as it’s run down and getting physical releases is harder than it should be, as a result I’ve ended up going digital. The future appear all digital sadly
Definitely not the reason why they don't include a disc drive to drive £699 to £779 or more.
I think the whole showing digital sales is a different topic of showing where the future is going not the reason why they didn't include a disc drive.
Edit: also want to add that you notice you'll get digital deluxe versions exclusive too the store and not retail where as you cannot purchase on disc which I have and many other probably may have purchased these versions of games which boosts digital sales.
I have also used the sales alot on the store and I felt i could have a game there and then. When you can buy vouchers cheaper online like on ShopTo where you'll save money and then further more strengthens the whole buying digitally.
My PS4 library where I bought many physical discs but then slowed down with PS5 just because of how easy to get hold of the games and ways of purchasing them and now Stars added in to get currency also adds to fuel of buying more digitally.
And that's the main reason I won't buy a pro.
I was actually a bit annoyed about it not having a drive, (I buy a lot of movies on 4k blu ray but have a dedicated player) until I realised I haven't been brought a physical game this year, it's not like it used to be at least here in the UK, not that many places to sell games and unlike movies there isn't an advantage to physical besides maybe saving a bit sometimes.
@Medic_alert Epic Games has been pushing very aggressively for closed platforms to open up and they've managed to do it in some cases (e.g. Apple devices in the EU, Android devices worldwide).
I feel that if Sony went fully digital only, Epic Games would try to force Sony to allow Epic Games Store on Playstation.
Because the PS5 has been such a disappointment to me this gen so far, if the PS6 is digital download only I don’t think I would invest in another generation. I accept the world moves on, but it doesn’t mean I have to. Playing more expensive games I don’t really care with lots of extra charges on a more expensive system where I have no security just seems like a brilliant jumping off point.
Sadly I don't trust any console companies to keep digital stores open and I don't wanna have a console that becomes e waste so if they go all digital I'll be out. Atleast on pc it's a open platform
Digital purchases are synonymous to "Spend money to own nothing"
And I guess people love that.
The reason they’re selling without the drive is to save money. This data just makes it easier for them to justify the decision and give a different reason.
@thefourfoldroot1 it’s definitely not irrelevant. Sony does not get a dime from second hand sales.
@Jacko11 will we though? That’s what’s concerning
It would be interesting to know what sales count, are PS Plus Essential games counted (for example).
Although I have paid for a Pro it still irks that the UK price is so high, enough for Sony to have added a disc drive and it still make more than a US version. Although this isn't Sony's fault, sterling has been on a steady decline for decades now (thanks Tories).
Personally I prefer physical media, I have a higher than average collection of games, CD's, and BluRay, whilst also subscribing to streaming services. Games that I've got through PS Plus and thoroughly enjoyed I will purchase a physical copy of (ideally new) but with supermarkets no longer stocking physical media, game being whatever the smeg that's become and HMV throwing in the towel eons ago it's harder to find games to browse and buy which means since the PS5 came out I've had to buy every game online. But at least I haven't paid MSRP for most, I've found the occasional game I've bought digitally ends up on Essential within 6 months which I see as a waste of money, at least if I have a disc in my hand it's just been made easier to play the game.
Also, I borrow games from (and lend to) friends, which Sony were so proud of supporting at one stage. *****.
And I noticed several people doubting statement, that digital is way more prevalent on Xbox as opposed to PlayStation.
Here is your proof.
But I disagree with a statement that this is a reason why PS5 Pro is shipping without disc drive.
PS5 Pro is without disc drive because:
A: Price of console would be insane 899€ (in Europe at least). It's just easier to market 799€ console as oppose to 899€ console. Especially since Sony got a lot of ***** even for 799€.
B: Sony wants to test market reaction - how many people will actually buy a disc drive. Yes, PS5 had version without drive, but since PS5 in first few years on market was on short supply, people bought a version that they could get their hands on. Not which preference they have.
I fully expect that PS6 will be also released without BD drive, but players will be able to buy one and plug it same way as they do with PS5 Slim/PS5 Pro
Sony has the data of how people play (all games you played and when) and certainly have data if you play digital or from disc and that gives them the full picture. And if you count in all the PS Plus games played, it will be something like 95% games digital. And that’s why they will try to bury discs with PS6.
Not only sales-based decision, but also usage-based.
Does anyone know if it's been confirmed by PlayStation that the current drive works with the Pro? Most (retail) listing's I've seen stipulate that it's for 'CFI-2000 model group - slim', with only HMV online declaring it's Pro compatible.
Not that I think Sony would go through the effort of making a drive specific for the Pro, but it wouldn't surprise me if they did something shonky. I mean, we all know how consumer friendly Sony have been, historically. Yes, I'm still irked that GT7 turned out to be online always, even though it relied heavily on being a return to the origins. (insert swear word that rhymes with 'bankers' here)
It's just like how Apple doesn't put a charger in iPhone boxes anymore, people who are going to buy it already have it. 🤷♂️
@Godot25 For over a year after launch I was sourcing PS5's for friends (not scalping) it was obvious then that the market had a preference for the disc model as they'd sell out in minutes whilst the disc-less models stayed available for 24hrs plus at many retailers, even though they were considerably cheaper.
I, nor any of my friends (I think I ended up buying 10 or so eventually), ever once considered the disc-less version.
And the disc drive is still out of stock in many, many places (or even countries), accelerating, maybe, the phenomenon.
I'll still buy physical games while I still can. I've waited for Alan Wake 2. And I can do it too for Black Myth Wukong (by the way, the physical is finally on its way, says the dev's).
Got Elden Ring and Ratchet&Clank Rift Apart for $20 on disc. You will never find such discount with digital. Not even mentioning the resale value.
@boarderbro88
You missed the point entirely
@B_Lindz and I believe that was before the PS4 launch where people pushed hard against an all digital, before Sony and other companies conditioned players to want what they really didn't want.
We still have the power to say no to that and push for physical media, but we won't. Customers are too busy being distracted by fights over the newest releases, with a lot of sites fanning the flames, and that seems to be the what these companies want so they don't have to make silly videos to smooth over things like this and have us keep moving in the direction they want so they can have maximum control over everything.
Way I see it is you can't buy a physical game that doesn't exist. Most games are released only digital. Games like Silent Hill 2 have an only digital deluxe version that people will gravitate towards. So combining all these factors, of course the numbers are going to skew towards digital.
There's also a lot of glossing over the fact that making a modular system means more profit for the company, even if it's slightly. You now have to pay almost 800 US for a disc based Pro, due to buying a whole separate piece you need to install, because the 700 US system doesn't have a drive. You're paying for your illusion of control.
Been all digital for a decade or more. I get all the negative comments, but really it's like the PS5 Pro articles - angry posters should instead respect the choices people make, because you're not them. You're effectively p1ssing into the wind anyway because all the hate and negative opinions towards people who buy digitally won't change a thing.
One other pro of digital that doesn't often get raised is when you have multiple consoles. I have my main PS5 in the front room, another one in a spare room downstairs for the cockpit/wheel setup I have there, and a third at my other property that I escape from the noise of society to sometimes at weekends. How would I manage that situation with discs? Carry them between properties by planning in advance what I want to play? Buy multiple copies on disc? Digital solves all that, access any console, anywhere.
Anyway, I don't hate on people who buy discs, I respect their decision and choice but it's a shame that it doesn't appear, from many comments here, to work the other way around.
For perspective, I have a friend who has 223 physical games in his collection. He has a wall full and it takes up so much space. Unsightly for a guy like me who’s an absolute minimalist.
Myself, I have a digital console with 191 games. All you see is my console and my controller. Sure, the whole “no internet” thing comes into play sometimes (it’s been only twice so far). But even then, most of my games are very much accessible internet or not.
I understand the qualms about all digital. But tech for the most part has been moving in this direction. At some point physical will no longer be an option.
Not surprising honestly. With how physical games are treated these days on modern platforms (just a physical DRM key for a game that is entirely installed and played from the SSD), their purpose is substantially reduced in practice. That's also why Switch physical sales are higher, because the games are actually played directly from the game card. They feel like they serve a purpose other than a DRM key.
And to everyone mentioning used game sales. Of course those are a thing, but publishers don't care about those figures in this context since they don't see any money from those sales. They only care about new game sales.
I have nothing to add, it just bothered me that there was 199 comments.
@MARl0 Switch has it's own issues. There's a bunch of Switch games that are cloud based. Stores are basically locking up an empty case with cover art and an unlock code. Buy some games digitally (like most of the Resident Evils -Capcom is doing this a lot) you're buying something that'll never really install to your system.
And.. yes.. they do figure in used sales.. why do you think they're push for an all digital future where you can't box them out of a portion of the overall sales of their game, at all? This has been an issue for a long time because it cuts into the new games sales, and being "attacked" by the rise in digital sales is why stores like GameStop have consistently played the victim card and looked to diversify towards trading cards and collectibles, basically becoming chain hobby shops. Publishers have spent the better part of a decade subtly making us comfortable with digital because we gave them a hard no before the PS4 and Xbox One came out over used sales and sharing with friends, but it's almost exclusively because this is a business and they care about revenue.
@BusyOlf Sweeny has had it in for Apple for years and dragged Valve into it but yeah I agree doesn't seem to want to look at Sony, Microsoft erc
Given what the PS5 Pro costs, you are definitely being asked to pay $100 extra for the drive, not 'saving' $100 by it not having one. Sony is just pocketing... well, not $100 since a BluRay drive is down to like $30-40, but they're pocketing that then pocketing another $70 over their cost when you buy the drive.
They can take away a disc drive all they want. I still have 95% of my purchased and supported games on PS4 and PS5 physically and that won't change 3 years from now.
I've told PlayStation on their own blog, same name as my username here...... If PS6 doesn't have an option for a disc drive..... I am done with any current present and future PlayStation anything.
And if they do that, don't bother adding BC to PS6, as any kind of PR bonus stunt, because it's pointless without a disc drive lol.
And again, can please stop talking about "700 dollars, 700 dollars, 700 dollars", for the Pro???
700 dollars is 630 euro. Why is it 800 euro is the real question and THAT'S why I'm not buying it.
It's already a rip off at 700 euro and I am willing to accept it since its always been the way with the PS4s and standard PS5.
But to screw over us Europeans, that helped still make PS3 sell 90 million total, who stood by you when lots of US customers abandoned you and went to the 360...... absolute disgrace and betrayal.
@Medic_alert That exactly why I don't think Sony will go digital only. The competition mechanism for digital only would probably harm Sony a lot like if the EU forced Sony to add Game Pass to PS.
Changes nothing. For $700 the Pro should include a disc drive and a stand. If people want to buy it w/o those then have a cheaper option for them. Come on.
The "Pro" console is supposed to be premium, right? Top of the line? So it should include everything INCLUDED WITH THE BASE MODEL AT LEAST. So yeah, PS5 Pro without a disc drive is a f'n downgrade from my base PS5, and I don't care that the Pro will give me 2 extra TFlops and will tell me I'm pretty. I'm not buying a downgrade (in my eyes) for a premium price. Ever.
Edit: I own zero PS4 or PS5 games on disc. It's not about that for me. It's about Sony thinking we're stupid.
Meaningless numbers which have been manipulated to push the narrative benefiting a multi-billion dollar company
Self-fulfilling prophecy. The more digital only machines you sell the more percentage of digital games will be purchased. I like to "almost" own my games but afraid I'm going to be in the minority, along with most people who visit this site. I'm not knocking digital fans, but I like more choices not less, in consumerism, and do not look forward to a future with zero physical console games.
Just be careful if you purchase a Season Pass DLC with physical. I once purchased AC Valhalla physical on release because it was cheaper than digital. Was enjoying it and ended up purchasing the Season Pass. Some time later finally finished the main campaign and sold it back to the store for a new game. Forgot I bought the Season Pass, not long after the 1st DLC came out and it was useless since I couldn't play it.
Since then if I buy physical I don't look at any DLC for it.
Going physical when possible until I can’t anymore.
@Faruko there’s nothing wrong with including catalogue games in the data. It shows you can buy games dirt cheap at some point, which cannot be matched by physical media. I mean I bought Resident evil 2 remake for like CAD$10 on PSN yet I’ve never seen this game on disc at that price. Cheapest I’ve ever seen it was CAD$25 even on the used market.
“Like it or not.” I’m going with “not,” then
@MatthewJP It's not nonsense. I worked my way through college behind the tills in GameStop for over five years. Second-hand sales eat very little in terms of new sales, and those used copies don't become particularly plentiful until after the sales peak.

@BusyOlf You seem to not understand that Sony or MS can ban a specific license from being used on your console regardless of whether it is digital or from a disc. In short, they can ban disc-based games as well.
Only way I'm buying digital consoles if they are cheap ....I'm not buying a digital console for £700... especially when I still rent games
@thefourfoldroot1 Well it kind of does. If Sony makes 100 discs of Spider-Man 2, and sells only 22 of them brand new, then the same 22 are being bought and sold over and over again. Maybe 10 of that 22 are never traded in. I'm sure they have some formula to know what percentage of their games are bought used. The percentage is still low enough, IMO, to do away with the disc drive.
@Grumblevolcano
Whilst I prefer the option of a drive rather than forcing a drive with the additional cost that would include, I 100 % agree - because of the various legal issues I dont think Sony could now offer a console without the option of a drive. Your comment should have more likes..

@LordAinsley Watching movies and tv shows is 80% the reason I want a disc drive and the last 20% is for games.
It honestly may be higher than 20% because I still buy discs when there’s a good opportunity to do so.
For sales sure if it was the console cost and what they went for then even more or under expensive of parts and however still taking a loss.
I keep the Xbox One around for not just One X being pretty good and Pro in it's own way but I like the CD app, any music platform I want to listen to then ONLY Spotify on PlayStation at that point I just use whatever I have local on other devices instead. Blu-ray/DVD support is nice to have. I still buy anime blu-rays, I got a few western DVDs/Blu-rays for cheap. So I want to have that physical movie/tv show access Sony.
Those with limited copy type company releases will want to get the physical there not just the digital version and go well I want to support them more or archive them not just buy, resell for high prices some people genuinely want to play them or keep the disk copy safe and play the digital.
In some cases I'm glad I own Demon Turf on Xbox has the PS/Switch versions are only digital which to me is odd and while on Xbox One X it runs not great I am still glad to own it then not as it's a great release to have access to. Same can be said for other PS/Switch equivalents more so that happen that odd examples I find like that for Xbox that I don't think happens often.
But Sony does realise that many are hardcore audience customers buying this including collectors? Including many physical focused. That like the option to be there. Let alone the disk drive being authenticated is a hassle for one even if 1 time unless repairs.
So you can replace it but once digital/services go and unless the digital licenses to work offline which they do but sometimes it can be picky beside PS+ or whatever PSN sync or so then yeah physical disk for sure as it doesn't have to call PSN as much unless an online only DRM physical game like SW Outlaws or The Crew, Outlaws or others or others (Ubisoft examples came to mind for some reason that's all).
Do they think collectors will be happy with physical, many people wanting physical to resell is a customer thing then Sony or others thing sure as they wouldn't be getting that money but even still.
It's just controlling, after so many mess ups it's just unfortunate.
Part 2:
Many families if getting a gift that isn't a PSN wallet top up or a digital game code but is a physical game you bet they want that physical.
I seek physical for 99% of my purchases, it's easier for me to access, I like physical media, I don't mind getting up to buy a game at the store as the browse is fun for me, I can see the condition, I can get up then digital and dealing with leftovers on the account as I hate that but has to be done (yes yes cards but wallet top up works in it's own one for some).
It just so happens that PS5/Series X don't interest me at all so PS4/Xbox One releases work for me. I have avoided Switch physical code boxes and the price differences are annoying for how low they are and how annoying the code boxes are from many third parties it's just sad.
Seeing Mario Rabbids 1 with code in box as Ubisoft does was enough for me to go even besides some other typical third parties to go wow this sucks. The only one I do own code in box is Drawn to Life as it's either PC or phones so Switch it is then. Not choice there. Other games I can get physical no problem. Then again even Gear Club Unlimited 2 I went ah standard edition, ah definitive edition ah standard edition with code. PS5 it's definitive so doesn't matter but on Switch it's a pain. Glad got Porsche (code/standard) and definitive edition will it all on the cart no download codes it's great. Could sell the Porsche edition but eh probably not worth it. The code is maybe used I don't know never used it.
Same with Pacman World Re-pac I went sorry Namco but no I am happy to own Kloanoa collection physical, I'm not buying Re-pac now you can say oh it flopped that's on you. I waited, you remove the cart, good bye or finding a PS1 copy or a copy of World 2/World 3 that isn't just the PSP version I own.
But family still buys the big stuff physical and minor stuff digital or digital of discounts/less hassle for the physical of certain pre-owned. I assume same may apply to other people as well.
But for me while I don't care about the best consoles (I am fine with Switch releases, or PS3/360/Wii late gen or obviously part of the PS4/Xbox One late gen of 9th gen) you bet when it comes to some people some of us want the disk drive for the games, for the DVD/Blu-ray play back, for CD playback on our Xbox One or Series consoles even if via an app then a PS3/360 where it's just there built in then a separate download for them, but we aren't all streaming or all digital we like to have options for things.
It's like BC some of us want the option of a digital purchase if hard to find the disk or a physical disk even if a the license for it to check, for me putting Battlefield 3 into my Xbox One was great because the disk didn't work for the singleplayer only MP disk I think so I got the game, beat it that day and went I'm happy I got to play it without being unable to play it but I still have the physical copy then digital and working around storage space.
With PS4/Xbox One or PS5/Series I go eh really installs. Switch I go eh skip up. Xbox One unless offline console that forces the update. PS4 you can try and block it but it's annoying. Switch is more fair with ignoring it I find to work around it. But sometimes 1.0 versions I want to play I shouldn't have to make the console offline to play 1.0 or shouldn't to play Immortals Fenix Rising because of the stupid Ubisoft services so I network cut my PS4 when I play that game.
Part 3:
So with PS3 many are installs eh but 360 they are optional and it's great. So Nintendo being the only one without physical installs especially during Wii U and Switch has been great. Old school sure but seeing as how much the installs only kind of helped on 360 and PS4/Xbox One onwards they are forced and still run badly you bet I like the flexibility. 360 if it's loud install, PS4 if loud yeah good luck with that.
But eh what it is then running off the disk like prior gens. We still want them to count for something same as any peripherals that's covered for the next gen like Wii to Wii U or PS4 PSVR to PS5 via adapter.
It's a bit funny that titles like Alan Wake 2 gets a physical release one year after the digital release ...
So 30+% of ALL games being sold in the EU suggests no one wants physical media? That's not what I read... and who are these gamers... I don't have anything against people preferring digital - but there's some weird narrative about how it's not worth having drives... shouldn't you also be asking, how many people already HAVE physical libraries? I know I do, and continue to use them. I don't thinnk that I represent the gaming body, but I do think it's strange that they can't even sell a pack-in box with the drive (even as a separate device) for the PS5 Pro - rather than hoping you can find one. Why should we have our gaming hobbies warped to meet the extra profits of Sony? Something is arse-about-face IMHO.
@BusyOlf Sony is a significant shareholder in Epic Games. Coincidence?... maybe Tim Sweeney knows where his bread is buttered...
@LogicStrikesAgain I think it's perfectly reasonable to cater for people that prefer digital gaming. I don't think anyone wants to take that away from anyone (I buy some older games digitally, but newer games physical... generally because I can save 20-30% of the cost, and I like having them physically available). I think the point of all of this is that the push is to get people to move exclusively to digital libraries, which can be monetised entirely at the whim of Sony. That, and the fact that once drives are "optional" it means that your legacy libraries are "replaceable"... ie Sony wants to re-sell games that you previously had physically.
The fact the PS5 Pro has an optional drive means that you also get stung by a crazy mark up on the hardware (AUD 160 in Australia for a $30 drive and a bit of plastic). Very Pro-priced.
I bought the og-ps5 with the disc drive on release for two reasons...to play enhanced PS4 disc games I already owned and to watch 4k blurays. To my disappointment, I've later learned that the 4k Blurays can be viewed in "Dolby Vision" which Google told me, was superior to HDR, and it also told me, the PS5 did NOT support Dolby vision, which was very likely not to change in the future. As the purpose of physical media began to fade out during the PS3 era where many games would prompt you to install game data to HDD, what purpose is there for the industry to maintain physical media? What would be the target consumer group? Appart from the so-called collectors, whose houses and garages are big enough to store massive Ikea shelvings full of nostalgia, I don't really see any future for this. Is a digital store game likely to get delisted over time? Yes, sure, yet on the other hand, physical games without dev support and/or servers support / god-forbid left in an unpatched state, are not that different when it comes to ruining user experience, right? No possibility to re-sell physical games ? How is it better to buy a 49e game and sell it for 19e after 5 years compared to buying a digital version during a store sale for 19e even if it gets delisted in 10years and cannot be re-downloaded? Exactly. Not hating anything, I myself have a fair collection, just trying to get a realistic picture here...
@thefourfoldroot1
Exactly, I haven't bought a brand new game for myself in a couple of years, but in the past twelve months alone I've bought 18 PS4/5 games 2 switch and 4 Vita used physical games.
Do these stats account for the fact that a number of games like indies and live service, only release digitally?
2 anime jrpgs (isekai slime and mushoku tensei) got digital only in Australia. Now Fantasian Neo physical in Australia is cancelled.
All 3 games are overpriced for non AAA digital titles.
I'm not buying them until they go on sale. No physical = no paying full price for digital sorry.
It amazes me how people really will prepare to die on the physical media hill. "If PS6 doesn't have a drive I'm not getting it!" Well bye then, I guess!
To Sony, every used game sale is a potential lost (new) sale. They don't care you can buy for £50 and sell it for £30 at CeX.
Owning the disc is not 'owning' the game. Yes, you can play v1.0 from the disc, but how many games are without patches these days.
PC gaming space is doing fine without it physical media.
For clarity, I buy and sell used games, and will continue to do so until I can't anymore. But the reality is physical media on a current gen console will not be around forever.
Well the ends coming for me then, I won't be buying downloads completely. What's the biggest joke is the digital & physical versions are the same price mostly lol. Unless you buy second hand from CEX etc... but we all know that's what they really want to stop. So basically when you buy a digital copy its worthless, just stuck on your hard drive. Just max profit for Sony & devs.
I thought the reason was Sony could sell a £50 Blu-ray drive and a cheap bit of plastic casing for £100?
I get the appeal of all digital for many people especially when it comes to not wanting hundreds of games stacked up everywhere. The one thing I don't agree with is the price of digital games on console often costing more than the price of the physical games. When you no longer have to pay for the manufacturing, distribution and the wages of the people selling it to you then it makes no sense to sell it at the same price digitally. It is price gauging at the highest level. You can argue development costs and what not are pushing prices that high but the development costs of most movies are still higher and even if they perform poorly in cinemas they are usually still a third of the price on physical media. So until digital game prices on consoles come down I'll stick to shopping around for physical and off the next generation is all digital I will finally stop buying consoles unless the prices come down.
Love how people only recently realised they were buying a license when you get a digital game or cd or movie and not actually "owning" it. Thing is it's the same with a physical game, even used to say so in the manuals in them good olde days. Benefits to physical are resale and the fact if the servers shut off you have your game. Problem is, and it's one i rarely see debates is the fact that near on most games are imperfect at release.
I have my physical copy of Witcher 3 for example. Servers are down and anyone who has a digital copy or HAD a digital copy now can't play it, but I can. Great, until you realise you can't get the plethora of patches that fixed the damn thing. On release there were bugs galore, broken quest lines, dodgy animation, sound glitches, the rain was messed up, no storage chests and the list goes on. Yes you have you little cd or blu ray in your hand but good luck if you haven't got is stored on a HDD as the vast majority of games without patches are almost worthless.
Finally, they got rid of the disc drive.
Then we can move on this topic.
If people really wanted physical, they’d buy physical, but they don’t anymore.
@thiagoauler 85% of PS5s are equipped with a disc drive. Sony counts skins, digital currency and battle packs as digital purchase in these figures. They're fudging the numbers to make it look like people but physical less than they actually do.
These propagandists are full of it. They never look at the why. Why are digital sales so much higher now? Well, because of scams like PS Plus extra and XB game pass. Not to mention the amount of games that are coming out as digital only, forcing people to buy digital and padding numbers for the push to digital only. This is dangerous to our rights and freedoms as gamers and the gaming community need to pull their heads out of their butts and stop licking corporate boots and finally stand up to these tyrants.
A disc drive is like an ash tray in a car, no one uses it.
@Coffeeglitch
Why would stores want people to buy digital?
